(Special thanks to a very valued GWTW friend who forwarded the
above photo for me to use with this Thanksgiving message.)
Tomorrow is the day when we Americans celebrate THANKSGIVING.
We sincerely hope each of us will be thankful for the blessings
we enjoy while living in the greatest nation in the world. Just
as the early settlers of our nation welcomed guests to their
table on this special day, may we in like manner also greet our
friends and relatives who will be visiting with us.
America has celebrated Thanksgiving Day since 1863. I think you
will find it interesting if you will take the time to read the
following from the man who presented the 1863 Thanksgiving
"We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven,
we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity,
we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has
grown. But, we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the
gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and
enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the
deceitfulness of our hearts, that all those blessings were
produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
Intoxicated with unbroken success we have become too self-
sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving
grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It has seemed
to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and
gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the
whole of the American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow
citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who
are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, so set
apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of
Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in
-Abraham Lincoln, 1863
As I was reading this, I wondered how many Americans today know
when, and by whom, this Thanksgiving Proclamation was presented.
When we put history aside we loose so much of the knowledge and
understanding that made us the great nation we are today.
Tomorrow as we take time to gather with family and friends in
recognition of THANKSGIVING DAY 2013, let each of us be ever
mindful and thankful for the life we have, the things we enjoy,
the friends we share life with, and the God that has given these
gifts to us. The joyous treasures and pleasures of life are not
of coincidence, chance, or twists of fate, but rather they are
gifts that come to us by the way of the ever constant and never
failing God of the universe.
Jim and I sincerely wish each of you a wonderful and peaceful
Thanksgiving celebration. Please remember those who have lost
loved ones since last year, and must now face the day with aching
hearts because their loved ones are no longer with them ....
