He [Selznick] said to me rather impolitely that to pay $50,000 for a book, the author of which nobody had ever heard of, was crazy and was I crazy. No, I said, I wasn't crazy at all, he was the crazy one, and we had a very good-natured argument about the whole thing and he said, "How do you know it's gonna sell?" I said, "I know it's gonna sell!" "How do you know it's gonna sell?", he said again. Well, I couldn't answer that question, you see, so we left it rather at an impass, and I said, "If you don't buy this book this afternoon, I won't be responsible because we're gonna lose it." And he said, "I'll think about it."
