Just in case you did not see the article in the 2001 Fall issue of THE SCARLETT LETTER (Editor: John Wiley, Jr.), we Hattie McDaniel fans are just tickled pink to know about the new movie of her life which is currently in pre-production in California.
The article informs us that the Georgia-born actress Ellia English purchased the rights to Carlton Jackson's 1990 biography of Hattie (Hattie: The Life of Hattie McDaniel) and is currently working on a draft of the screenplay. She plans to fill the title role herself. She is quoted as saying, "She (Hattie) paved the way for all of us. I appreciate what she went through, and I want it to be known. So many people see only the end result, and they don't see the journey."
At this time, it looks like the movie will be a made-for-TV movie. We will anxiously await for further information about its completion and release ...
