CLARK GABLE TO BE REMEMBERED BY CADIZ RESIDENTS
By ESTHER MCCOY, Staff writer
CADIZ — As Margaret Mitchell was penning the novel “Gone With the Wind” that would bring fame to herself, little did a young actor born in Cadiz — Clark Gable — know that it would also bring worldwide fame his way.
Because of Gable’s rise to stardom, his birthday is celebrated each year in the village where he was born on Feb. 1, 1901.
The Clark Gable Foundation once celebrated his winter birthday with a Friday cocktail party and auction, Saturday afternoon talks by guests and a dinner-dance with those attending wearing costumes from Gable’s movies.
“There was usually bad weather, and it kept visitors from coming a distance. We decided to change it to a summer event in the hopes that it will bring more people in to see our museum, located at the exact location of the home he was born in on Charleston Street and all the events we have planned,” said Nan Mattern, executive director of the foundation.
“The Clark Gable Celebration will be held Aug. 17 and 18 with some exciting events,” she said.
Greg Geise, who portrayed Baby Bo and Bonnie Blue in “Gone With the Wind,” will be the special guest for the event.
A slide projection by Herb Bridges, lecturer, author and a collector of “Gone With the Wind” memorabilia will be presented at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Harrison Hills Auditorium. The cost to attend is $10.
A cocktail party and auction of Gable memorabilia is planned at 6:30 p.m. at the Cadiz Country Club. Those wishing to donate anything connected with Gable are invited to do so. Call (740) 942-GWTW. The cost is $15, and Ross Beck will be the auctioneer.
An auction bonus will be available to those who purchase an auction item of $50 or more, as a $10 credit will be given toward the purchase.
A tour of Harrison County historical sites is planned Aug. 18 starting at the Gable Museum at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $10.
Also that day, a movie will be shown at the Puskarich Library at 10 a.m.
At noon, the unveiling of the new Gable sculpture for the monument that is in place on Charleston Street will be held. Lou Cella of Fine Art Studio in Chicago was the designer and sculptor.
A Southern Belle Tea will be at the Wallace Lodge at 2 p.m. Aug. 18 with special guest Debra Conner portraying Margaret Mitchell. A rose-patterned tea cup and saucer will be given to all attending the tea.
Costumes for the tea and dance are encouraged but not required, according to organizers.
The dinner-dance, where guests wear movie costumes, will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Wallace Lodge, Sally Buffalo Park. Mark Statler will provide the dance music from 8:30 to 11 p.m., and the cost of the dinner and dance is $25.
Reservations can be made by calling the Gable Museum at (740) 942-4989 or call and receive a special price for hotels through the Gable Foundation.
