We trust you have had a wonderful Valentine's Day. As hundreds of thousands of other women have done today, when I got up this morning I looked for my gift and found it on the computer table (my husband claims I spend all the time in the office anyway, so he knew I'd find it there) and started my day off just fine.

I was thinking this afternoon of all the love that has been expressed around the world today. This is the time of year when we tend to prioritize love -- love for our spouse, our parents, our friends -- love for that person that something inside tells us we cannot live without. Just before choir practice tonight, a young lady was so excited and telling everyone around her that her sister, unexpectedly, was going to receive a proposal for marriage from her boyfriend tonight. She was just bursting at the seams trying to keep the secret from her sister. I wonder how many thousands of times that same scenario has played out throughout the world today.

I also thought of another kind of love; it's a love not about people, but it's a love about "things." Sometimes in our lives "things" come in competition with the love we should have for those who enrich our lives on a daily basis. I'm a person who really doesn't put a lot of emphasis on material things, but I am making myself a promise today that I want to spend some quality time giving greater weight and consideration to the things that vie for my affection or, especially, my time.

I remember reading "things" that interest a person and claim their allegiance and loyalty say more about them than what they think. I don't want to be occupied by the temporal things of this life; I want to try to be a better person for loving the right kind of things. I think the past couple of years dealing with what has seemed like one illness right after the other in our family, has brought this to my mind as a reality of life.

So, I am a little late since New Years is long gone, but on this Valentine's Day my resolution to myself is to not be a slave to those things that are soon to pass away, but value, understand, and nurture those "things" that will enrich the lives of those I LOVE.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO YOU AND YOURS!!
