August 14th (happens to be my birthday so it is easy to remember the date) is approaching us this weekend and on the 16th (also the day of August that Elvis Presley died, so that is easy for me to remember, too), it will have been 49 years since Margaret Mitchell died in 1949.

Today the nurse (Wilma Dicks Fowler) who helped undress Margaret Mitchell after the accident and stayed with her to take care of her all during the night (until the private-duty nurse came in during the morning), come into my office and told me all about what happened during her 8 hours with Margaret Mitchell. It was really interesting to hear her talk in such detail of the doctors and what transpired during that time. She was a 20-year-old nurse at the time and assisted both the Grady Memorial doctor and the private doctor who attended Ms. Mitchell during the night. She never regained consciousness and died on the 16th.

After everything was over with, Ms. Mitchell's secretary sent a bottle of Margaret's perfume to Wilma as a token of appreciation. It was a bottle that Ms. Mitchell had used, and it was only 3/4 full. Wilma, at the time, was kidded by the other nurses who ribbed her that they could have at least sent her a full bottle, but she treasured the bottle of "Heaven Sent" by Helena Rubinstein because it was actually used by Ms. Mitchell.

David Selznick, in appreciation, sent Wilma a double orchid corsage. She had kept this corsage all this time, and when she came in today, she gave it to me. I actually got chills when I received it. I don't know if this is something that the Margaret Mitchell House would like to have, but I really think I am going to offer it to them. Of course, if they do not feel they can use it, I will be VERY PLEASED to have it among my very cherished items in my collection.
