When Ellen O'Hara died and was lying in state, rather than worrying about Barbara O'Neil accidently showing any movement on-screen, Selznick paid $1,300.00 for a wax mold of her body. The candles at the bier served as more than just props. They were used to suffuse the lower screen with warm light, while a bluish light was used for Ellen's face.
