During our visit to Dover, Delaware this past week, Patrick Curtis (baby Beau Wilkes), Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes at age 7) and I attended a ceremony for dedication of a Korean War monument at the Dover Air Force Base. Since my uncle, who was raised as a son by my parents, was killed during the Korean War at age 21, this ceremony had a special meaning to me. And, ironically, Dover AFB is the military mortuary for the East Coast where all the bodies are shipped of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom ...
While visiting the Air Force Museum at the base, we are seen here beside one of the WWII B-17 fighter planes. When seeing one of these facilities, it really brings us to the reality of what our military personnel sacrifice to protect our freedom we so freely enjoy every day. Mickey and Patrick both served in the military and this visit really hit close to home for them.
By the way, for those of you who might now know, Patrick is one of the most
highly decorated Viet Nam War Marine pilots. Patrick flew 283-1/2 F-4 missions over Viet Nam. Yes, the 1/2 one was the toughest -- he was shot down and spent many months in the Naval hospital before being able to return home.
